Social Inclusion Day, celebrated on December 10, is a date that aims to raise awareness throughout society about the importance of the applicability of human rights. In this way, the creation of this day encourages everyone to make a difference, build a fairer world and be careful so that everyone's rights are truly guaranteed . But where can or should we start?
Before we talk about our role in promoting social inclusion, let's demystify a very common mistake, the association of the term integration and inclusion. Despite appearing and often being used as synonyms, they have very different meanings and applications.
What is social integration?
In the dictionary, “social integration consists of the process cell phone number list of introducing individuals or groups into larger social contexts, with more general standards and norms .” We can conclude then that diverse people, regardless of their needs and desires, are inserted into an already existing context, thus not requiring any effort to adapt to society. People with disabilities, for example, are responsible for preparing themselves to be integrated into regular schools, companies and society as a whole. There is an effort on their part to adapt to existing rights.
What is social inclusion?
According to the United Nations, “ social inclusion is the process by which efforts are made to ensure equality of opportunity – that everyone, regardless of background, can achieve their full potential in life.” This means that each person must share a sense of belonging where they live, be accepted in different roles in the community, be involved in activities based on their personal preferences and choices, experience healthy social relationships and have their rights effectively guaranteed, corresponding to the that she actually needs. In this case, the efforts are mutual, both from the people who will be included and from society as a whole.
You could tell the difference, right? We have made a lot of progress in recent times, but unfortunately many people still face situations of social exclusion because they are not recognized or seen as an integral part of the community , whether for economic, racial reasons or even because of a disability they have. We understand that social inclusion is the opposite of this and that it is everyone’s responsibility.
